Welcome to Week 2

If you like to know what’s ahead, here’s a quick preview of the concepts we’ll explore this week. Each week presents a self-development theme that brings together the daily concepts for that week. These themes guide you through your journey by providing a framework, so you always know where you are in your wellness development and how far you have come towards achieving your goals.

While not required, it is recommended that you review the weekly theme before you start your challenges and reflect upon everything at the end of the week. The suggested readings allow you to return at a later date to dig deeper into concepts and support you and others that may be using this system with you.

When you are ready, feel free to jump straight into the first card (next post); Leadership.

What is it?

The theme of Week 2 across the 6 wellness pillars is;

PURPOSEFUL IMPACT.

Before any journey, it's a good idea to have an accurate understanding of yourself. This includes your strengths along with areas that need a little more attention and could use some growth. The wellness concepts presented this week are areas where everyone can benefit from increased knowledge and have room for growth no matter how confident you may feel. Be open to learn, and accept these new skills that you can develop.

An overview of this week's concepts.

Each is sequential and sets the foundation for the next day and the concepts for the coming weeks.

  • Leadership.  This is connected to vocational wellness.

  • What are the attributes of a good leader?

  • Did you know leadership strengths benefit you even if you don't aspire to be in a leadership role? They build character, improve relationships and create opportunities for promotion.

  • Leadership is something you can learn. It is not something you are just 'born with".

  • Strategic Judgement. This is connected to intellectual wellness.

  • Learning how to make good decisions is important. It is also important to know when you should or should not act on those decisions. This is a precursor to wisdom.

  • Learning these skills can help you to adapt to change and help you to see the bigger picture. This boosts confidence and lessens anxiety and fear.

  • This is a required leadership trait.

  • Love.  This is connected to emotional wellness.

    • This is more valuable that all the wealth and power than you can imagine.

    • It comes in many forms from our intimate partners, family, friends, pets, compassion for others and relationship with God.

    • It includes loving yourself as well.

  • Purpose. This is connected to social wellness.

    • Why are you here? Why are any of us here? Life is not a random sequence of events as part of a cosmic accident.

    • Purpose does not have to a big. It comes in the small, consistent and meaningful things you do that make this world a better place. Many even go unnoticed by most. You always benefit though.

  • Helping Others.  This is connected to social wellness.

    • Very closely linked to purpose. No one succeeds in this world on their own.

    • The "self-made" person, the "lone wolf" the person who personifies the "survival of the fittest"-all crap. It makes for a good story but not true in reality.

    • Anyone who wants to argue the point, ask them; " Did you will yourself into creation or did your parents play a role?".

    • Be willing to help others as you will need help at some point too.

  • Physical Fitness. This is connected to physical wellness.

    • The obvious benefits are becoming stronger, healthier and physically more appealing.

    • Physical fitness also helps reduce stress, lowers anxiety and is a great (healthy) outlet for anger.

    • Being physically fit sends social/vocational cues as well that a fit person is dedicated, consistent, able and willing to endure discomfort to achieve a goal.

    • Don't forget about the emotional wellness benefits too...

  • Rest/Reflection Day. Take a break, complete one of the challenges you may have missed this week and/or reflect on everything you learned and accomplished this week.

    • Was there anything you learned this week from these challenges ?

    • Were you inspired to dig a little deeper into any of these concepts?

    • Was there a concept that was particularly challenging or stood out to you in some way?

As was mentioned in last week's preview, this might seem like a lot of information, but this is a resource tool for you to revisit anytime you wish. The point is not to find a solution or master every concept. This is meant to introduce and encourage you to spend a little time putting each concept into action. You can spend as little or as much time working through these concepts as you like.

Have a great week!

Deep Dive

Here is a suggestion if you wish to explore more on the theme of self-assessment to reference later on this journey.

"Give and Take" by Adam Grant

The central idea of the book is very simple; Success is not determined only by talent, effort, or intelligence. It is heavily influenced by how we interact with other people. The most surprising takeaway from this book though is that true impact is not realized by the act of giving alone but how you strategically help others. Thus, purposeful impact.
