13 - Initiative

Today's challenge.

Pick something you have been procrastinating about and do it.

What is this?

Initiative is all about taking charge. An initiative is the first in a series of actions. Initiative can also mean a personal quality that shows a willingness to get things done and take responsibility. An initiative is the start of something, with the hope that it will continue.

Why is it important?

Initiative is the ability to be resourceful and work without always being told what to do. It requires resilience and determination.

People who show initiative demonstrate they can think for themselves and take action when necessary. It means using your head and having the drive to achieve. This is a hero quality.

How can you improve your ability to take initiative?

  • Volunteer. If there is a new position or project at work that becomes available that you are interested in, make sure you are the first to volunteer for the assignment. If you know a new opportunity is coming and you have time to prepare by getting the proper skills and experiences to make you a serious contender, then don’t hesitate to get ready. That way, when the time comes, you can make sure you are the first one standing in line.

  • Be a voracious learner. Any personal development that is available take it. If you have a chance to suggest training you would like to have, do your homework and prepare a pitch for your boss. Learn as much as you can. You will quickly become one of the companies most valuable assets.

  • Learn first-aid skills. You never know when you might be able to help someone. It gives you the confidence to act quickly and decisively in an emergency.

  • Get involved. Find a cause you are passionate about. How can you make a difference?
